PORTFOLIO: Pattern Observer

Pattern Observer is an online resource helping to empower textile and surface pattern designers to grow their business through informative articles, interviews, tutorials, micro courses and an private design community, The Textile Design Lab. Michelle Fifis is the founder and designer behind the company, and she reached out to me wanting to amplify the visual presence of the brand. The existing website was missing a true logo, and any branded elements, so we worked together to build the assets that could be used throughout her brand and website.

MOOD BOARD

Our goal with the Pattern Observer brand was to create a visionary, strong, joyful and confident brand without being overbearing. With the brand visuals, it needed to be brave and bold, but also curious and experimental. The brand is geared toward creative females, so we wanted to make sure the visuals really captivated the right audience and created a strong impression. When choosing the colors, we chose to go with a bold pink and a punchy yellow for the two main bright hues. To help balance the palette out, we brought in a softer light pink along with a deep purple. We also incorporated some neutral greys to help ground the palette.

LOGO DESIGN

The Pattern Observer brand has a sister site, called the Pattern Observer Studio. We needed to create a primary logo for each of these that is distinct, but also that work together to create a unity between the two facets of the brand. We started out with the primary logo design with 3 concepts. With each of the logo designs, my goal was to create a memorable design that also maintained simplicity. Due to the complexity of patterns displayed around the Pattern Observer site, I wanted to make sure the logo would be strong enough to stand on its own and not compete with other visual elements. After a round of revisions, we finalized a version of concept 1 that features the initials from the name.
